NEW YORK (CNN/Money) -- Pfizer Inc. has raised its $2.3-billion profit estimate on its worldwide sales of Viagra, one of the world's top-selling medications.
Pfizer is also facing a legal challenge by the U. Food and Drug Administration for selling counterfeit versions of the drug.
The company says it will comply with the law but won't admit to charges unless the government has the legal authority to do so.
"Counterfeit versions of Viagra are not approved by the FDA," said David Graham, Pfizer's chief executive officer.
In its suit, Pfizer said the counterfeit versions were made in China, India and other countries that did not have the FDA's approval process.
Counterfeit Viagra pills have been sold in Europe for more than two years, but have since been withdrawn in favor of other drugs.
Pfizer officials said they were unable to recall the counterfeit versions.
Pfizer also said it was unable to identify the fake products.
"The counterfeit versions were manufactured in China and India, and they have since been discontinued," Graham said.
The company is seeking to have the U. Food and Drug Administration identify the counterfeit versions.
The FDA will review the cases, and Pfizer will pay the legal costs of defending them, Graham said.
"Counterfeit versions of Viagra are not approved by the FDA, and the counterfeit versions are not tested in a legitimate way," he said.
Pfizer said it will only be able to produce the fake versions "unless we're confident that it's in the best interest of the patient."
Pfizer said its worldwide sales of Viagra were "incredible" at $3.5 billion in 2014, growing at a compound annual rate of 5.6 percent to $3.2 billion. In the first quarter of this year, Pfizer shares rose more than 40 percent to $4.59.Pfizer shares rose $1.08 to $12.86, while the company's shares fell $1.02 to $11.35 in the U. on the New York Stock Exchange on March 15, 2014.
The lawsuit was filed by three plaintiffs, including a U. resident who alleges the company illegally distributed counterfeit versions of Viagra.
